POETRY OF VALMEEKI & BIRTH OF RÄMÄYANA
..........................
Valmeeki and his disciples greatly admired this discourse of Narada and worshipped him again, after which Narada took a very cordial leave of them and went to his celestial abode above. It being the time for noon-day worship, Valmeeki, accompanied by his disciples, Bharadwaja, went to the river Tamasa nearby for bathing and ablutions and was very glad to find the bathing-place pure, calm and fair like the heart of a virtuous person.
Quite unusually for him, that day Valmeeki, bewitched by the great beauty of the forest at that time, perhaps psychological after hearing Narada and forgetting his regular rites, roamed over that vast forest. That great sage saw a couple of Krouncha birds, making melodious noises and caressing each other. Then a hunter, most callously and in utter disregard of his holy presence, slew the male bird with an arrow. The female bird flew about its dead male, giving vent to most plaintive notes. The sage was convulsed with agony for the bird and anger towards the hunter and cursed him thus, "O Hunter, you won't live long, but will perish soon for killing the bird in mating". But he was very much intrigued at the verse form, both musical and rhythmical, the curse had taken. That was the first verse. So he called it Sloka, suggestive of its birth in his sorrow and distress. His disciple, Bharadwaja, was also struck by the novelty of those words and began to memorize them.
Valmeeki returned to his hermitage and though he did not omit any rite, his mind was fully occupied with the incident at the river and the weird curse from his mouth. When he was meditating upon these things, the great Lord Brahma appeared before him and was duly worshipped by him. Even in that holy of holy presence of Bhagawan Brahma, Valmeeki's mind was still running upon his mysterious outburst and the most heinous deed done by the most wicked hunter imaginable. Brahma smiled at this and said that the Sl?ka came through Valmeeki's mouth by his grace and decree. The divinity asked him to write the story of Rama (Ramayana) in the form of that Sloka, as narrated by sage N?rada to him. He told Valmeeki that he was well qualified for it, being a great rishi and that by his grace, Valmeeki would be knowing all the details of the history of Rama, including the most secret deeds and the innermost thoughts and counsels of Devas and Rakshasas and human beings. The great grand Sire of all the worlds, further declared, "O! sage, as long as this earth bears the mountains and the rivers flow on this earth, your "Ramayana" will be in vogue, noticed and worshipped, in all the worlds. In a similar way, so long as Ramayana flourishes thus, you will live and wander at will in any of the upper or the lower worlds of mine (created by me]'. Then the Bhagawan vanished leaving Valmeeki not only in extreme astonishment, but also fully resolved to do so, as the great Lord bade him.
Thus was the holy Ramayana born. The words used by the sage Valmeeki are most delightful and choicest, their meaning is exquisite and noble, the metre is musical and the lines are well-Balanced. It contains numerous beautiful and charming compound words, fine derivatives and all niceties of grammar. (These two last Slokas constitute, as it were, the definition of poetry, especially the epic poetry).
The coming of the divine sage Narada, the killing of the birds - a petty bird, by a petty hunter and the coming of Bhagawan Brahma constitute so to say, the tryst with the great destiny of the whole world. Ramayana is the guiding light of the world and its influence spiritually, morally or as a work of poetry is immense and timeless. Keats Sonnet "On looking into Chapman's Homes" become no less apt, when in the place of the word "Homer", the name "Valmeeki" is substituted. Valmeeki, also, is the monarch having sway over "every realm of gold (poetry).
