Why was the book "Ragtime" by EL Doctorow named "Ragtime"?
What is Scott Joplin's significant in the book?
What's the significance of Coalhouse, who is believed to remodeled after Scott Joplin?
Ragtime is named the way it is because the book is about Americans' ability and willingness to adapt to change. America changes whether you are willing to accept it or not - and in the book we see characters that flourish because of it (Tateh) and who aren't (Father). That said, Ragtime, the music that is the basis of American music such as Jazz and rock and others, is meant to "rag the time" or just barely keep up. Regardless, the song always ends, so it resembles America because it is constantly changing and there are some that can't keep up, but it definitively always will. Coalhouse is modeled after Joplin because he was an African American who was able to transcend the popular ideas of the time, and be an interestingly huge success. Coalhouse, just like Joplin, was a complete whiz at the piano - and for someone who is not classically educated to take the world by storm with their music is almost a definitive American Dream.
